Sooke Elementary School Weekly Update

May 1, 2026

NEWS

Thanks to our maintenance crew for filling some holes in our field, brand new paint in our halls, filling up our sand box and tamping down some gravel around our picnic tables to keep us safe out there.  They are so awesome and take great care of our school!  (OK, our electrical, carpentry and HVAC team is awesome too, but harder to see their work!)

May 4-10 is known as Mental Health Week.  There are some great resources for parents at the bottom of this message for you!

If you are moving and won’t be attending Sooke Elementary in September, please let the office know asap.

Sounds like there is some excitement out there… We are in the process of setting up and gaining board approval for a before and after school program for the fall.  We are not accepting registrations at this time and should be able to provide a timeline later this spring.  Please watch our weekly updates and website for when this will be open for registration.  We anticipate we will have a clearer picture and timeline near the end of May.  Thanks for your patience.

May 7th – National Child and Youth Mental Health Day!

Here are the details: When Our Children Hurt Inside – Nurturing Awareness and the Power of Relationships:

Younger children can experience emotional pain that they don’t yet have the words to describe. Sometimes this shows up as statements about not wanting to be here or behaviours that look like self‐harm. This gentle, supportive session may help parents and caregivers understand why these moments happen, what they may mean, and how to respond with calm connection. Together we’ll explore how small moments of being seen, heard, and supported can make a big difference in a child’s safety and well‐being.

Date & Time: Thursday, May 7th, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm (Live)  A recording will be available in the coming months.

ADHD – The Real Deal video presentation by Dr. Duncan will dispel the many myths surrounding ADHD, and provide up-to-date scientific facts about cause, prevalence, diagnosis and treatment. He will explain how and why the ADHD brain works the way it does.

Digital Wellbeing and Mental Health: As parents, we struggle with balancing our children’s time spent in the digital world and what we consider the real world. It’s not easy to know how much time spent on technology is too much, and how to set boundaries that don’t create conflict. Learn from Dr. Kristy Goodwin, digital wellbeing and productivity researcher, speaker, author and consultant.
